Search engine optimization is the central part of WordPress blogs. WordPress SEO is much needed to rank high for a particular keyword in search engine results. It has two types of SEO based on location in which SEO settings are held.
- SEO Inside the Blog
- SEO Outside the blog
One is done inside your blog, called On-page SEO. Another one is Outside of your blog is called OFF-page SEO. Both the methods have the same intention of ranking your post quickly in Search engines and Display as stable at the top of the search results for a single search query. In this post, we will see only On-page SEO.
Generally, suppose you enabled the option ‘Allow search engine to index this blog contents’ in privacy settings in the settings section of WordPress admin. In that case, all the search engines will index your blog pages during its search queries. So we may think that is why we need this WordPress SEO. But it is necessary.
We have to write blog content for both human beings and the machines like google. The Machine is the primary reader of your blog content. Once it is satisfied, the Machine will display these blog contents to the readers or visitors.
Even though you have quality content in your blog, if the machine(Google) requirements is not satisfied, it will not be shown to readers frequently.
So we need to do WordPress SEO for machine-like google. For this reason, we have slightly adjusted our presentation for our blog content. So we need to use essential keywords in our blogpost.
WordPress SEO is used to give some more details about your blog to the search engines like google. WordPress SEO indicates to search engines that the blog is about what. Google consider these details while indexing the blog content to the particular search query.
For any search query, Google has several blog pages in its search results. So to index our blog post at the top of these results, we need to do WordPress SEO.
The basic WordPress blog SEO details are given below.
- www or non-www version in the domain name.
- Permalink settings
- WordPress Blog Title and Tagline
- Google xml site map and All in one SEO pack plugin
- Submit blog in all search engines.
Thesis five are essential basic SEO steps for any WordPress blog.
www or non-www version in the domain name
The first thing after the installation of the blog set up the domain name because each domain name has two versions. One is – www version another one is the non-www version. So first, we should set up this in the settings section of the WordPress admin.
If you need your blog as a www version, then In the settings pages, we should use the WordPress installation directory and blog home both in www version, then it will redirect the non-www version to the www version of the domain.
If you need your blog URL as a non-www version, then we should usehttp://domain.com in the settings page both WordPress directory and blog homepage, then www.domain.com will redirect to the non-www version.
It will not change www and non-www versions later. We should do it at the beginning.
Permalink settings is the second important SEO step that it should do in the beginning. This will not be altered once the search engine starts indexing your blog contents. We can set up a permalink in the settings section in the WordPress admin. Here we have five options to set up the permalink. But I would recommend custom type %postname%. It will be shown in the below screenshot. and explained in the WordPress setup and Configurations post.
WordPress Blog Title and Tag line
The word press blog title will be shown as Title in the search results list in the Google indexing. This should be less than 64 characters for good SEO. If it exceeds this limit, then it will not wholly display the title in the search results. Also, this title should have the keyword which describes what is your blog is all about.
Tag line – the tag line is another essential description of your WordPress blog, and This tag line contains three or four critical phrases at a length of a maximum of 150 characters. These key phrases should describe all of your WordPress blog contents.
The below image shows where the search query title and tag line displayed in search query entered in search engines like google. Also, it will show this title, and tag line in the browser tabs navigation.
Google xml sitemap and All in one SEO pack are the two essential SEO plugins installed initially. We should install it before the first post publishing. Once you have installed both plugins, activate these plugins.
In the settings, we have a link called xml sitemap click on the link. You will have the page like the below image. Just detect the xml sitemap generated path. It is like yourdomain.com/sitemp.xml. HIn this URL, you will see all the pages available in our WordPress blog.
Setup the frequency of sitemap generation for the homepage, post as hourly and pages, categories as per your wish. The priority should be high for posts, and homepage others may have a little bit lower.
Now click the generate xml sitemap manually for the first time. For next time it will be automatically generated.
All in one SEO pack – It is another Important SEO for all WordPress posts and pages. Once you have activated this plugin, we will have options like Custom Title Tag, Meta description and Meta keyword at the bottom of every post page editors. These details will be stored in the databases.
This custom title tag will replace the post title in the search results. This Meta description will be shown as a description in search results. Custom title tag has keyword pro the related post or page, and Meta description has keyphrases relevant to the post.
We should also use Meta keywords for search engine ranking. Use proper vital words, which We should use in the post content area.
We have xml sitemap generated by the google xml sitemaps plugin, and now we need to submit these in all search engines (google. Yahoo, bing, etc.) to quickly index the WordPress blog pages search results.
For google use Google Webmaster Tools,
First, submit your blog in google webmaster tools. Here you should submit your blog with the correct version, www or non-www, which should be specified in the settings in the WordPress admin. Make sure both WordPress settings and webmaster tools have the same version of the domain. Next, create an account with a google email and submit the WordPress blog. Webmaster tools will give you a code to verify your site. We need to place this code within the body tag of your WordPress blog.
For this, we need to edit the WordPress theme header file using the editor link available under the appearance section in WordPress admin shown in the below image. Then, place the code and click verify my blog link in the webmaster tools account.
Once you verify the blog, click the sitemap link in the webmaster’s account, add a new sitemap link, give the sitemap file path, and click submit button. That’s all you have submitted your WordPress blog in google webmaster tools. In the same way, we can add sitemap in yahoo and bing search engines. Now must be needed basic WordPress blog SEO is over.
Every post or page title should be used as H1 Tag, and the post subtitles have been used as an h2 tag. Each WordPress page should not have more than one H1 tag, and We can use more than one h2 tag on the single page. In addition, we should Use a custom title tag, Meta description, Meta keyword pro for all posts and pages. These options are available after the installation of all in one SEO pack plugin.
Some WordPress themes like the Thesis theme have built SEO options, so there is no need to install one SEO pack if you have a thesis theme on your WordPress blog. The thesis theme also has archive page SEO options.
Submit all the blog posts in social bookmarking sites like Delicious, StumbleUpon, Digg, etc.. and other community sites. Also, share your blog content on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter. And submit your blog RSS feeds in blog directories.
Content writing and Letter spacing
It is the primary step of WordPress SEO. Before we start writing Content to the blog post, we need to know what is the post is all about? And what types of search queries are used to find this post to make posts helpful for the visitors. Use the answer for the above question as a keyword in the title and the Content of the post. IT should not exactly match the keyword with the title. It may be synonyms of the keyword.
Use some other synonyms as a key phrase in the Meta Description of the post. While writing the Content, we should have the reader on the mind and a search engine. Because we have to write Content for both human beings and machines like google, we need to use essential keywords or its synonyms during the content preparation of the blog post.
Don’t use too many links in a single paragraph. One link for every 120 words is good enough. Also, don’t write lengthy paragraphs. Short sections are suitable for ease of readability for visitors. From the design point of view, we need to use excellent font and proper line space and letter space for good visibility of Content.
We can add custom category titles and Meta descriptions and keyword press each category for the category page. While creating the new class, we can update these details. We can also use introductory category content. It will be displayed at the beginning of the category archive post list. This essential Content has a complete short description of the category posts, which is helpful for new visitors and search engines.
Also, Use category base tags only if all your blog categories are in one particular niche. We should use one category in one post for better search engine ranking. I won’t recommend you to select multiple categories for a single post.
Image SEO and Video SEO
Now search engines will not use precisely the rank image and video content in search engines. But it will give more credit if a webpage has video content. So we should indicate to the search engine our web page contains video and images. So we need to do SEO for photos and videos used in our WordPress blog. To show the pictures and videos at the top of the image and video searches and text results.
Google webmaster tools have a guideline to create image sitemap and how to submit in search engines. We need specific details to create an image sitemap, for example, Title, alt text and description.
When we upload images in the media library or insert images in WordPress posts or pages, we can enter Image Title, Alt text, Description, caption, and sizes. These details have been used in image sitemap to feed search engines about our blog image. Alt-text is used as anchor text for the image link, and title text is used as link hove text in-text links. The caption is the shot description on the image shown in our WordPress blog, whereas the report is a long detail about our blog image.
The google image sitemap has been submitted in the same way as xml sitemap submitted in webmaster tools.
