Wishlist Member – Sequential Upgrade in Membership Levels

by Suresh Karuppaiya

Wishlist Membership plugin is the one among the popular membership site creation plugin in WordPress. It has extraordinary features for its lowest price compare to other membership script in WordPress.

Sequential upgrade is the unique feature available in Wishlist Member plugin to deliver membership content in subscription based membership websites. Different membership scripts use unique mechanism for upgrading membership content to the next membership levels.

For example aMember membership software uses incremental content delivery for content upgrade to the next membership level and Magic Members membership plugin use drip content delivery for its different membership levels. Incremental and Drip content delivery explained here.

Sequential upgrade in Wishlist Member Plugin

Wishlist Member has many ways to use sequential upgrade for the membership system we have created for our valuable readers. To explain clearly about the sequential upgrade we need to create subscription based membership site in WordPress with few months of subscription length.

For example we have a plan to create membership website for photoshop training tutorials. First we should decide how many months we offer the training module to complete the photo shop training.

Then first is to create a unique membership level for each month of training that we need to offer in Wishlist Membership site.  From here, the Sequential Upgrade feature would enable to us to ADD or MOVE our members to the next month’s training once they have completed the first month training successfully in a specified period of time.

So for example, we have ‘Module 1’ once the member signed up to the membership system they will automatically added to the ‘Module  1’ and then members are automatically moved to ‘Module 2’ after 30 days and then 30 days later they are automatically moved ‘Module 3’ and so on.  Note that 30 days is an example, you can choose the number of days in the Sequential Upgrade area.

We have two methods in sequential upgrade as follows

  1. Sequential ADD upgrade
  2. Sequential MOVE upgrade

The two types of sequential upgrade explained below.

Sequential ADD Upgrade in Wishlist Member

We have separate membership level for each modules in the membership site we can create new membership level in Wishlist by using this article. Once we have created the same number of membership levels like modules.

Now we need to connect each module (membership levels) with sequential upgrade in order to transfer the members from Module 1 to Module 2. In case of ADD type sequential upgrade in Wishlist, when this is set members in Module 1 will be added to a membership level after the amount of days specified by the membership site owner. The amount of days should not be ‘0’ days.

ADD Sequential Upgrade in Wishlist

ADD Sequential Upgrade in Wishlist

So for example with a 5 module course after say 15 days we have our members who started on Module 1 be sequentially added to Module 2 after 15days. At this point they will be a member of both the Module 1 & Module 2 membership levels.

This is the importance of ADD type sequential upgrade. The members for the Module 1 are copied to the Module 2 after the 15days we have specified earlier. After the 15th day every member has aces to the Module 1 and Module 2. This is useful for training programs that we want to allow the members to review previous module information.

In Sequential MOVE upgrade somewhat differed from the above functionality in Wishlist Membership plugin

Sequential MOVE upgrade in Wishlist Member

In Wishlist Member sequential upgrade it transfers the member from Module 1 to Module 2 after a specific time period. We will discuss with the same example mentioned above. The MOVE type sequential upgrade works with the same basic principle of sequential ADD upgrade with 1 big difference.

The difference is after the amount of days specified in the Module 1 the member of Module 1 will not be added to the next membership level instead all the members from Module 1 will be moved to next membership level. It won’t have copy of members in the module one.

Move Sequential Upgrade in Wishlist

Move Sequential Upgrade in Wishlist

So after the 15th day the Module 1 members moved to Module 2 they don’t have access in Module 1. But in case of ADD sequential upgrade after 15th day member have access in both Module 1 and Module 2.

So using the same example mentioned in sequential ADD upgrade after 15 days of being on Module 1 our members would be moved to Module 2 rather than added. With sequential ADD they are a member of both membership levels at this situation but with sequential MOVE they will now just be a part of level 2 they don’t have access in Module 1.

This feature is useful for training programs that want to control what they member can see. Someone in this sequential training program would not be allowed to see old content.  Example. Someone in Week 5 would not see Week 4 or previous week’s content anymore if we had setup period as 7 days.

Differences between ADD and MOVE type sequential Upgrade

The content protection and grant access to the particular membership level varied. It is important to note these differences and grant access to our content according to the addition of new posts depending on whether we are using sequential add or sequential move.

In the ‘ADD’ sequential upgrade we want to have the ‘Module 2’ membership level to have access to all the posts and pages also ‘Module 1’ has the posts and pages etc.

Then after the set amount of days, they would be moved to ‘Module 3’.  So again we want everyone in the ‘Module 3’ membership level to have access to all posts and pages etc. that ‘Module 1’ and ‘Module 2’ have access to as well as ‘Module 3’.

The big difference between the both sequential options is that in Sequential ADD, users are being added to another membership level each month so they are members of MULTIPLE levels in the membership system.  So each post would only need to be granted access to by the level that it belongs to no need to setup access for all the levels. With sequential move they are only members of one level and we have to set the access for our posts and pages.

Problems in Sequential Upgrade in Wishlist Member

The specific amount of day’s setup in both MOVE and ADD upgrade shout not be ‘Zero’ days. It should be at least one day. If we add 0 days to the sequential upgrade period then the member upgrade to the next membership level can happen instantaneously.

For some kind of situation we need the instantaneous member transfer to two quick levels for this situation we need to setup the specific amount of time as 0 days.

But we cannot have a series of 0-day upgrades. If we setup like immediately the members transfer to the final level in case of sequential MOVE upgrade. The Wishlist Member plugin will not allow instant access to several membership levels. That is the amount of days in the subsequent levels 0,0,0,0,0 will not work.

Problems in Sequential Upgrade

Problems in Sequential Upgrade

But 0,1,0,1,0 specific periods between the levels will work fine. Just make sure there should be amount of day between zeros (0) in our sequential upgrade. This is useful for training programs that want to offer instant access to another Membership Level usually used for bonus level.

<h2>Upgrade Free Members to Paid Members in Wishlist

Members will need to register to get access to our site if we are charging a cost for membership, even if they are signing up for a free account initially.

So, we need to set up a Payment button that charged $0 for the Trial Period and then started charging our monthly fee every month after that. Then we would setup our Sequentially Upgrade according to the payment schedule integration in membership sites.

So, there would be a ‘Trial’ Membership Level that would upgrade to the ‘Paid Membership Level 1’ after the Trial Period ends in the payment system. Then, that ‘Paid Membership Level 1’ would upgrade to ‘Membership Level 2’ after one month and so on.

It’s important to note that some payment options do NOT allow $0 transactions for example: PayPal. So we need to set up a 0.01$ for Trial Period.

Conclusions

Wishlist Member has couple of ways to use sequential upgrade for the membership system we have created for our valuable readers. To explain clearly about the sequential upgrade we need to create subscription based membership site using Wishlist Member plugin.

Wishlist Member has two types of sequential upgrade one is ADD sequential upgrade and another one is MOVE sequential upgrade. In ADD type membership upgrade the members for the Module 1 are added to the Module 2 after the specific time. Once the time period ends every member has access to the Module 1 and Module 2. This is useful for training programs that we want to allow the members to review previous module information.

In MOVE sequential upgrade the members moved to the next level once the time period ends. The members have access for the particular membership level they have currently in. they don’t have access for previous levels. Share your thoughts on comments section.
